Korb 1 Margaret Korb Nadia Barksdale English 101 Rumors Explanatory Synthesis Essay Rumors are spread every minute, everyday, allover the world. The gossip factor of hearing a rumor or gossip triggers many people and makes them more intrigued to listen and share the “juicy news” with others. After sharing the news, their friends begin to go through the same process, and thus it turns into an ongoing cycle of spreading false information to individuals. This is an uncontrollable aspect of human nature. Most people spreading the information have no idea whether or not their information is factual, because they didn’t hear the news from a direct source, but instead another person in the gossip chain. The entertainment factor of hearing a rumor is satisfying for many because it gives people a topic to discuss with others in depth. Rumors however, do provide information for people, accurate or not. Rumors and gossip can make scary or uncomfortable situations easier for people because they feel more secure about knowing the news happening. Rumors and gossip can also be used to make people feel superior to others. Finally, rumors and gossip can be used to provide information that spirals out of proportion and anyone’s control. Rumors and gossip become a factor when there is fear large numbers of people. One example of rumors being spread in times of fear was during the “Pendragon situation” at the University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa campus earlier this year. I personally was involved in this example because I as a student was affected by the spread of rumors during a serious time of panic for students. When we talk about rumors and half-truths we talk about hurt people, broken hearts, lost friends, destroyed relationships …In fact one lie is able enough to ruin a whole life. However, the effect of the tale bearing and rumors takes various ranges and leads to different consequences like in Matt Donaghy’s situation, a 15 years old student at rocky river high school ,was accused of planning a bomb threat to kill everyone in the school , slander caused for him a lot of inconveniences from the investigation and suspension, being betrayed and disappointed of his friends who couldn’t be counted on, who didn’t try to get in touch with him to console him and who seemed for me to be believing that Matt could be involved in such a terrorist…show more content…

However, the effect of the tale bearing and rumors takes various ranges and leads to different consequences like in Matt Donaghy’s situation, a 15 years old student at rocky river high school ,was accused of planning a bomb threat to kill everyone in the school , slander caused for him a lot of inconveniences from the investigation and suspension, being betrayed and disappointed of his friends who couldn’t be counted on, who didn’t try to get in touch with him to console him and who seemed for me to be believing that Matt could be involved in such a terrorist act “bombing the school”, he started to feel solitude often besides the pressure of his parents to avoid distorting the family name and their reputation, ending with his father suing the school with an enormous amount of money as an indemnity(compensation) for what had happened to Matt until he tried to commit suicide, thanks to Ursula( who has a very exceptional character, not very active socially , different from the other girls, one of the best athletes in the school) who could stop him at the last minute, and who the rescuer of him, in fact Ursula testified for him, Matt’s experiment made him perceive and discover his real friends, and made him conscious, his story is very probable to occur in the reality.
